A Touch of Spice: Za’atar Spice Mix

Written by Medhaavi Mishra

A staple of Middle Eastern cooking, za’atar is easy to prepare and wonderfully versatile to use. Make your own mix and use it as a seasoning over salads, hummus, and eggs or as a roasting spice.

Or just tear up some warm pita bread, dip it in olive oil, and into the za’atar. The result? Yum!

Za’atar Spice Mix

1 tsp black pepper, ground

2 tsp salt

2 tbsp sumac

6 tsp dried oregano

6 tsp sesame seeds

2 tbsp cumin seeds

  1. Roast the cumin seeds in a dry pan till they begin to release their aroma. Turn off the heat.
  2. Grind the roasted seeds to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.
  3. Add all the other ingredients and mix well.
  4. Store in an airtight container for up to a month.
